Armed Forces Day Facts

The United States is one of several countries that celebrate an annual Armed Forces Day. President Harry S. Truman was instrumental in establishing this American holiday as a way to thank the military and their families for their service. It was created on August 31^st, 1949 and was first observed on May 20^th, 1950. Although Armed Forces Day was created to replace the days already celebrated by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and the Marine Corp, those branches of the military still observe their own specific days in addition to Armed Forces Day. Armed Forces Day falls on the third Saturday in May each year, and each year there is a theme to the celebration.

Interesting Armed Forces Day Facts:
President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act into law on July 26^th, 1947, which joined four military branches. It essentially combined the Army, Navy, Marine Corp and Air Force under the Secretary of Defense’s authority.
The National Military Establishment was established in 1947 as a result of the National Security Act.
In 1949 the Department of Defense replaced the National Military Establishment.
Secretary of Defense in 1949 Louis Johnson announced Armed Forces Day on August 31^st, 1949, and President Truman proclaimed the first Armed Forces Day on February 27^th, 1950 to be observed on May 20^th that year.
The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated nationwide with parades, air shows, receptions and open houses.
The first theme for Armed Forces Day was ‘Teamed for Defense’.
On Armed Forces Day military exercises are held at sea, in the air, and on land as a means to honor their members and to show the U.S. civilian population their state-of-the-art equipment.
