So you’ve found yourself in the position of having not so great credit. Well here are my top 5 ways to make your credit great again. One thing you need to realize is repairing your credit will take time and a lot of patience. Personal finance columnist and author of Your Credit Score, Your Money & What’s At Stake, Liz Weston, notes that you might not see any improvement in your score for 30 to 60 days. After all, the best way to raise your credit score is repair your history, and then continue to monitor it over time.

1. Check Your Credit Report

It’s impossible to fix your credit if you don’t know what is driving your score down. So your first step should be to obtain a copy of all 3 (Experian, Equifax & TransUnion) of your credit reports and check them for any apparent errors. You’ll want to keep an eye out for any inaccuracies or wrong information such as late payments, inaccurate balances or unknown accounts.

Bonus tip: We like Identity IQ as a source to obtain your reports. You can get all 3 in one place for only $1 and keep it open if you decide to monitor it.

2. Reduce the Amount of Debt You Owe

Your credit score is going to continue to suffer until you can pay off some of your high balances. Stop using your credit cards and start to keep track of your debt. Write down every account you have open, how much you owe, and the interest rates. Use this information to create a payment plan for yourself, paying off the cards with the highest interest rates first, but always maintaining minimum payments on the other cards. A large factor in helping the banks determine your risk factor is “Credit Utilization”, which is simply referring to your balances in relation to their limits on revolving accounts.

Bonus tip: You want to focus on getting your balances under 30% utilization.

3. Pay your bills on time.

This should go without saying, but paying your bills on time is the best way to raise your credit score. Payment history can account for up to 35% of your FICO score, so any late or missed payments are going to keep your score down, way down. If you have missed payments in the past, work to get your payments up to date, and then stay current on those accounts. The longer you continue to pay your bills on time after fixing these mistakes, the more you will see your score increase.

If you have a long history of late or missed payments, you may be concerned that these will keep your score down forever. But, the older the issue is, the less it will count for. If you can get your payments up to date and continue paying on time, your good payment patterns will start to erase your poor ones from the past.

Bonus tip: If your payments are constantly late just because you’re forgetful, use an automatic payment tool. This will ensure you won’t miss any payments due to being absent-minded.

4. Dispute errors

Remember when you got that copy of your credit reports and checked them for errors? Well, if you found any errors you need to dispute them with the credit bureaus. You should contact each of the credit bureaus that have the error in that report and ask each bureau to verify or remove the information. The best way to still do this is by writing them. (Yes snail mail)

Bonus tip: Your letter will be one of thousands that are received by the bureau each day, so you need to ensure you letter is clear and concise. This is not about writing an essay but being focused on the dispute error and reason, along with providing the relevant contact information to be corrected. If your letter cannot be understood clearly the chances of you receiving a response are decreased, and you may receive a stall response because of it.

5. Establish credit

Someone who has credit cards and has continually paid the balances responsibly is considered way less of a risk to a creditor than someone with no credit cards at all. Your credit score will increase over time if you have a couple of credit cards open as long as you don’t charge too much, and pay the bills on time.

If you’re unable to get a traditional credit card due to your credit hurdles, your best bet will be to get a secured credit card. Make sure your secured card reports to all 3 of the major credit bureaus and use it as a chance to prove your trustworthiness.

Raising your credit score is going to take time and energy, but it’s definitely worth the effort in the long run. Once you have pinpointed any errors on your credit report be sure to take the time to correct them. After you have fixed any past indiscretions, follow our guidelines to maintain your score. Remember that all your recent positive patterns are going to outweigh any past hurdles you’ve encountered.

With April, comes one of the best days, April Fool’s Day. On this day it is okay to be a “fool.” It’s also a day where jokesters have a lot of fun and cause a good bit of mischief. But one area where you don’t want to be a fool? Your credit. So don’t be a fool and read on to learn more about four common credit mistakes you need to avoid.

Given the easy accessibility of credit in the US, there are some credit traps that can be tough to avoid if you aren’t careful. Here are four of the most common credit mistakes and how you can avoid them:

Mistake #1: Payday loans and cash advances

Payday loans and credit card cash advances are always a bad idea. Always. They come with ridiculously high interest rates, on top of other fees. Unfortunately, due to the high fees, these types of debt often become cyclical, with borrowers being forced to take out a new one each time the previous one is paid off, just to make ends meet, and making it difficult to ever crawl out from under the debt. Do yourself a favor and avoid this type of predatory lending at all costs.

Mistake #2: Maxing out your credit cards

While the algorithms credit card companies use to calculate credit scores aren’t made public, it is estimated that around 30% of your credit score is based on your rate of credit utilization, meaning how much credit you use versus how much is available to you. If you consistently carry balances on your credit cards that are more than 50% of your available credit, your credit score will take a serious hit. Be sure to use your credit cards wisely and don’t carry balances that are more than half of your existing credit line.

Mistake #3: Making minimum payments

Making only the minimum payments on any debt with an interest rate is a serious and costly mistake. Depending on the amount of the debt and the interest rate, paying only minimum payments will add hundreds or thousands of dollars to the amount you pay back over time. Do yourself a favor and get into the habit of paying more than just the minimum payment–even if it’s only a few dollars more–anytime you can’t pay off a balance in full.

Mistake #4: Using credit to supplement income

Credit cards should be used as a convenience, not as a means of supplementing your income. Credit cards are great for things like travel or large purchases. Purchasing those items on a credit card provides added benefits, like additional protections and insurance, depending on the card used. You should not be using credit cards for things like gas and groceries, if you don’t have the funds to pay for those goods immediately. Using credit cards to pay for necessities indicates you are living beyond your means and putting your financial future at risk by living on debt.

Although these four mistakes are not the only ways in which people hurt their credit, they are some of the most common. Now that you’re aware of the pitfalls, you can avoid making these foolish mistakes and protect your financial future.

If you have found yourself in any of these situations, the only thing “foolish” is not doing something about it. Call NCF at 877-720-7587 to discover how we can help you repair your credit and move towards a better financial future.

Do you really need a professional to assist you with credit repair?

The answer: it depends.

It depends on your goals. It depends on your income. It depends on how much of your credit needs repairing. Most of all, it depends on you.

Repairing your credit on your own is entirely possible. So is repairing your car when it breaks down and doing your own taxes and putting a new roof on your house. It is possible for you to do all those things on your own. But should you? More importantly, do you really want to?

Car repairs and home repairs and taxes are just a few of the things we hire professionals to do for us every day. We hire professionals because they are experts and have the knowledge and experience to give us what we want while saving us time, and usually, money. How often have you attempted a DIY project to save money and it ended up costing you far more time and money than you ever expected?

Credit repair is one more thing that you can absolutely do for yourself. But how much time and money are you willing to invest in acquiring knowledge, negotiating with attorneys, and completing the endless forms required to accomplish your goal? How do you even know if you’ll be successful?

The Federal Trade Commission advises it takes consumers an average of 24-37 months to repair their credit on their own. Do you have 2-3 years to invest in this process?

At National Credit Federation, our average customer completes the program in six months. And we do most of the work for you. You can trust our experts, because they are the best in the field. Our counselors have worked on hundreds of cases and have many, many happy customers to show for it.

There is a monetary cost involved with hiring a professional. Before saying you can’t afford it, stop and think about what having bad credit is truly costing you. Bad credit results in higher interest rates, which could potentially cost you hundreds of dollars per month. You also may have to pay deposits for things like utilities and cell phones. Bad credit means loan denials, and higher insurance premiums. You could even lose out on a job offer, if your potential employer conducts credit checks on job candidates.

While it is possible for you to repair your credit on your own, you have to ask yourself if it’s really worth it.

If you’re in need of credit repair help, We understand your credit is like your financial fingerprint and everyone’s is just a little different and unique to them. So we have created some great options for you in order to help you live a restored credit lifestyle. Whether you want to do it yourself or have a professional do it for you, CLICK HERE to review your options.

Some Facts You May Not Know About Veteran’s Day

According to History.com Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day–a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

In 1954, President Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.

Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). In Europe, Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

Did You Know?

There are approximately 23.2 million military veterans in the United States.

9.2 million veterans are over the age of 65.

1.9 million veterans are under the age of 35.

1.8 million veterans are women.

7.8 million veterans served during the Vietnam War era (1964-1975), which represents 33% of all living veterans.

5.2 million veterans served during the Gulf War (representing service from Aug. 2, 1990, to present).

2.6 million veterans served during World War II (1941-1945).

2.8 million veterans served during the Korean War (1950-1953).

6 million veterans served in peacetime.

As of 2008, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for service-connected disabilities.

5 states have more than 1 million veterans in among their population: California (2.1 million), Florida (1.7 million), Texas (1.7 million), New York (1 million) and Pennsylvania (1 million).

The VA health care system had 54 hospitals in 1930, since then it has expanded to include 171 medical centers; more than 350 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 live-in care facilities for injured or disabled vets.

Why We Vote When We Do.

Why November?
Most Americans made their living from agriculture in 1845 and Congress felt that November was the most convenient month for farmers and citizens living in rural areas to get to the polls. Preparing fields and planting crops consumed lots of the public’s time in the spring and summer months. But by early November, the harvest was over in most areas, and the weather was still mild and dry enough to allow travel over the dirt and rock roads of the day.

Why Tuesday?
In 1845, before Florida, California, and Texas were states or slavery had been abolished, Congress needed to pick a time for Americans to vote. We were an agrarian society. We traveled by horse and buggy. Farmers needed a day to get to the county seat, a day to vote, and a day to get back, without interfering with the three days of worship. So that left Tuesday and Wednesday, but Wednesday was market day. So, Tuesday it was. In 1875 Congress extended the Tuesday date for national House elections and in 1914 for federal Senate elections.

“Winning the election is a good-news, bad-news kind of thing. Okay, now you’re the mayor. The bad news is, now you’re the mayor.”

America’s largest home builder DR Horton has choosen National Credit Federation as it’s go to credit repair company!

I have been in Houston, TX the last few days with one of our Regional Directors Dan Fries, who laid the ground work for this relationship, along with several other NCF consultants.

You see DR Horton having partnered with Bank of America as it’s go to mortgage lender knew that many people could not buy their dream home or for that matter their first home due to their credit scores. As Alfredo Rodriquez, the Director of “My New Home” a pilot program of DR Horton designed to put more people into a home of their own, explained to me… they needed the best credit repair company they could find and their search ended with an agreement to have National Credit Federation as it’s sole source for those with credit challenges. His biggest reason was… the bottom line results we get for our members with our exclusive attorney assisted process.

This event, the first of many hosted 350 folks coming through the doors, at the Westin Galleria in downtown Houston, TX, to see what all the excitement was about. And let me tell you EXCITEMENT just doesn’t do the event justice! It was an EXTRAVAGANZA, a huge success and honor to be a part of it!

DR Horton through Alfredo’s vision have put together a process like none I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen alot in this business throughout the last 30 years! His vision starts with a simple truth…People want to own their own homes. That said, the question becomes so “how does DR Horton as a builder help more people achieve home ownership?” And that’s where the “My New Home” program was born and where the magic begins.

Simply stated by partnering with Bank of America, National Credit Federation, Farmers Insurance and many other top vendors for the different aspects of the home buying process that a new home buyer may experience, a better overall experience can be offered and enjoyed.

I mean even the simplest things from having pizza and cokes for the home owner planned on move in day and yes even the movers are geared up and ready to go has been thought of!

Through a better managed process, the savings a new home buyer realizes can be dramatic. The savings range from a simple down payment offered at $100…YEP, $100 and you can get a new home under contract and be off to the races! Additional savings with closing costs, insurance, and yes they are even covering our fees upon closing!

Here’s the basic steps after you pick out your new home model and the lot. Bank of America will generate an approval for you to know exactly what your payment and down payment will be (as little as 3.5%). Actually B of A has created a brand new FHA product just for this program (I told you there is all kind of cool stuff!) where they can help out with credit scores all the way down to 580! If for any reason credit is an issue no matter if it’s a particular line item on your credit report or too low of a credit score that’s where National Credit Federation comes in.

It’s our job to help you get approved to remove anything that might be preventing you from achieving your goals. And check this part out…DR Horton is so confident and committed to their vision that IF YOU ENTER OUR CREDIT REPAIR PROGRAM THEY WILL CONTINUE TO HONOR YOUR CONTRACT as long as you remain in our program and refund you up to $1400 when you close!!!

Let me say that another way. YOU CAN BE A HOMEOWNER!

Horton has kicked this off in Houston and will expand to other markets as quickly as can be managed but with friends like DR Horton and Bank of America, the number one builder and number one mortgage lender in the country well, let’s just say a ton of people that thought they could never qualify for a home are going to have their dreams realized!

To find out more CHECK IT OUT!

Be Bold!

Herschel

PS We had a professional, shooting video coverage but I don’t have that in my hands just yet. I should soon so I’ll get that posted on the website and blog about what new things are happening as events continue to unfold!

The last couple of days has been very interesting. I have been contacted by the guys at TU, and by guys I mean the President and the COO, who seemed to be interested about working with us in a more constructive fashion. They wanted to discuss how we could work together to streamline the process and cut costs for both of us.

My first reaction was …WHAT THE>>> Seriously, it’s not every day one of the big 3 credit reporting agencies calls and wants to work out how we can work together. Needless to say, my interest was sparked but as well my radar was going off all over the place. After the first call I told them I felt like I was a mouse looking out of the hole in the kitchen sniffing at this big old piece of cheese that was just put on the old mouse trap. And that when I reached out for the prize… WHACK…the hammer would fall and I’d lose my head!

I can’t help it, it’s just how I felt. So caution was in the air but…

After a second call and much investigation it appears that they are reaching out to the top credit repair companies in the country. By top, I mean in shear number of disputes being sent in on a monthly basis. That was pretty cool as there is no place to go to discern where we rank in the big scheme of things but if they say we are on the list, then I wasn’t going to argue that point! As a matter of fact, we were on the list of the top 25 in the entire country for them to reach out to based on the total volume of disputes.

As I let the discussion continue it truly seems as if they have turned a corner, at least I hope they have, in coming full circle. They acknowledged they want credit reports as accurate as possible and who better than to have “approved” vendors like National Credit Federation that know the specific items that are wrong on one of our members credit reports, to be able to help?

As I let that absorb, I advised them I felt if they were sincere in their words that it did indeed seem like a win/win/win situation. They cut costs, we cut costs and most importantly for our members a streamlined process where we can better control the overall process. I also advised them that the overall results still would determine the success, to which they agreed.

Wow, who says Christmas only happens once a year! I’ll keep you updated as things progress but it does look like because of our persistence of battling with the credit bureaus and so many of you sending in your referrals as well as signing up for our credit restoration service the tide is beginning to turn!

Be Bold!
